Not at first. Be sure to check out my original announcement post a few comments above.

RE: MaGMML2 - Rules + Discussion. RESULTS STREAM #1, MAY 20TH
Before I go on too much with this post, here's a quick warning first: The video I'm posting here contains footage of various MaGMML2 entry levels. If you don't want to spoil yourself before the results stream or the full release, I'd suggest not watching it.

With that said and done, and for those that don't mind spoilers...guess what I managed to finish today?

Here's a sorta official trailer for MaGMML2! Along with a reminder for the date and time of the results stream. More info and links can be found in the description (along with the music source as well).

RE: MaGMML2 - Rules + Discussion. RESULTS STREAM #1, MAY 20TH
Well, I guess I'm officially starting the stream at 10 AM, then! It says so on YouTube, so it must be true.

First off, REALLY great video. Superb production values, very eye-catching, showcases a broad and thoughtful sample of the game, and definitely gets you excited. I was not expecting this at all, and I guess it's good to have a preview of several levels that I can already tell are better than mine.

But...wouldn't this have been more appropriate for a "Hey, the game is released, go download it!" video? For people who know about the game already, a 60-second teaser with the stream date probably would've been sufficient to whet everyone's appetite without spoiling too much. And for people who've never heard of this project, this seems like the most extravagant advertisement ever for a blind LP by some random guy whose video quality won't be nearly this good.

No matter where you go, there you are.

RE: MaGMML2 - Rules + Discussion. RESULTS STREAM #1, MAY 20TH
Honestly, my original intention was to post this upon the launch of the game. I admit I probably did jump the gun a bit and accidentally put more pressure on you by posting this early. I eventually settled on trying to make it more of a "it's coming soon" sorta thing, but I guess it ended up being more focused on the results stream than anything. I think I can attribute that to my desire to get the trailer out once it was done (I had been working on it for a solid month or so, and given the amount of other projects and things piling up during it, it sorta got me more and more anxious to finally put it out and get some weight off my shoulders).

RE: MaGMML2 - Rules + Discussion. RESULTS STREAM #1, MAY 20TH
It has come to my attention that people might want a real schedule of events for the announcement livestreams. Here are the planned start times, with multiple time zones listed for your convenience. The plan is to stream for however long I can last before becoming too hungry or tired to continue, most likely 3-4 hours at a clip.

Saturday, May 20 at 7 AM PDT / 10 AM EDT / 3 PM BST / 12 AM AEST (Sunday)

Saturday, May 20 at 4 PM PDT / 7 PM EDT / 12 AM BST / 9 AM AEST (Sunday)

Sunday, May 21 at 11 AM PDT / 2 PM EDT / 7 PM BST / 4 AM AEST (Monday)

I recognize that these times may not be ideal for everyone, but I wanted to offer a wide range of times so that everyone has a chance to attend at least part of a stream during normal waking hours. This also allows ample time for everyone (especially me) to recharge between streams so that we don't get burned out.

Once again, I will be sampling all the submitted levels, not necessarily playing them to 100% completion, to ensure we get to see where everyone placed by the end of the weekend. After the results have been fully revealed, I'll livestream the rest of the game on a "whenever I feel like it" basis until I reach 100% completion.

Important Links:
Stream will take place here on Twitch (Follow me to get an e-mail notification when I go live):
https://www.twitch.tv/flashman85

Archived streams will be uploaded here on YouTube, in case you miss anything:
https://www.youtube.com/c/flashman85live

Notifications when a stream is about to start will happen here:

Official Flashman85/GeminiLaser Discord: https://discord.gg/7D7E7m3
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GeminiLaser
Twitter: https://twitter.com/nathanielhoover

Lastly, if you still haven't played MaGMML1, download it here or watch my archived livestream of it here. There WILL be references to the first game, and you'll be sad forever if you're out of the loop.

No matter where you go, there you are.

You should probably put the results in a spoiler tag. Some people might not want to know the results until they have played the full game.

RE: MaGMML2 - Rules + Discussion. RESULTS STREAM #1, MAY 20TH
Well, I thought I would have done better, but just by watching that trailer alone, I figured I'd be in the bottom 5 tiers. Not completely terrible and I'm not super shocked by my results looking back. There's lots and lots of room for improvement for sure. It seems like the general consensus was that enemy spam was the biggest issue.

And for the record, I had never played that Super Mario themed level from the first MAGMML contest.

I can't be the ONLY person who LIKES enemy spam in my Mega Man game, right? It's a war, after all.

May your metal blades always kill everything ever,
May your Top Spin never randomly run out of energy.
May you never use Spark Shock on something other than a boss.
And may Eddie never give you ammo when you need health.

Well, there's a right way to do enemy spam and there's a wrong way to do it. I did it the wrong way lol.

Darn. I was really aiming for the Top 10 (and I ended up getting robbed out of it by 0.2 points), but I'll take 11th. Congrats to Shinryu for taking the win! Your hard work paid off!

RE: MaGMML2 - RESULTS! THE WINNER IS REVEALED!
Oh man, I can't even begin to tell you how much my heart was racing during last night's reveal stream. Either way, I'm really glad that so many others seemed to enjoy my stage! I have to extend further thanks to Zieldak as well, mainly for helping with the coding on the gimmick of the stage. Without him, my level basically wouldn't exist. If I'm being fully honest though...a part of me feels that my stage didn't even deserve to get the top spot. Personally, I was rooting for NaOH's or Strife's levels to win. Korby and Freeman's level was another I wouldn't have minded seeing in 1st place either.

On that note however, I need to touch upon something I realized last night: I accidentally forgot to include Haunt Man in the trailer. I...really don't have an excuse for this. My apologies to Korby and Freeman in those regards. I had his silhouette and everything all ready in the video, and I just somehow forgot to include it. I'll definitely have to make up for this somehow once I get to that stage during my playthrough series.

If you missed any part of the results streams (and, really, was anyone aside from me and Z-Saber there for all 20 hours?), I'm now in the process of archiving everything on YouTube. Here's the playlist—I'm uploading each tier as a separate video, so check back every day for new videos until they're all posted:

Thanks again for the massive turnout! Hopefully I did sufficient justice to everyone's hard work for this contest, participants and developers alike. I'm open to feedback if there's anything you particularly liked or disliked about how these streams panned out.

Officially, I'm waiting until MaGMML2 is released to the public before streaming the game again. As mentioned before, I plan to go back for 100% completion, but it'll just be a casual playthrough at my own pace.

No matter where you go, there you are.

RE: MaGMML2 - RESULTS! THE WINNER IS REVEALED!
I wrote up a post-contest commentary to go with my level. Felt like I needed to do this, because for all the anxiety I had about my level in the interim period between submission and the results stream, I want to clear a few final things up.

Here's the TL;DR version: I'm utterly shocked my level did as well as it did. This level should not have gone anywhere near the Top 25; the boss was absurd, the music was not good, the level lacked consistency, the graphics I feel left something to be desired. But evidently I managed to put something together that scored reasonably well. I'm happy to have some closure on this, so now I can get back to work. I'll be back for round 3.

And here's the long version:
Here's the long, self-deprecating commentary that I promised.

I was completely shocked that my level peaked at 21st place. I know I probably annoyed the hell out of everyone by constantly degrading myself in stream chat, because I honestly believed and still believe that by all appearances, my level is not that good at all. I harbored some pretty bad insecurity and embarrassment about it in the intermediary period between my submission and the contest results stream, and the anxiety was eating me alive when I knew that I really shouldn't have been allowing it to. So don't consider this commentary as attention-seeking or begging for sympathy, I just feel the need to clear my conscience about my level, and just why I was being so harshly self-critical.

My first mistake was trying to treat this contest as an opportunity to flaunt my artistic ability. In the early going, I devoted more time to stage graphics and backgrounds than gameplay, and it only took a few rounds of play-testing before I went back and did a serious revision of enemy placement, level geography, and the like; all of which still weren't perfect by the time I submitted. My stage theming and aesthetics are its strong point, and I appreciate the commendation from the judges, but even still I believe it could have been better. It's not exactly Mega Man style, first of all. Nathaniel hit on something that I wanted to have, that this was what you would see when Dr. Wily starts attacking cities in a world-domination attempt, in the vein of the Mega Man Ruby-Spears cartoon and some of the Rockman 5 OVA. Even still, if this was really meant to be a Mega Man-themed level, a more futuristic setting would have been more thematically appropriate. But instead, I went more the more modern, New York City-type aesthetic. Also, I'm seeing a lot of my undesired personal conventions seep into the graphics of my level, slightly wonky perspective, tracing, and highly selective areas of detail. This bothers the hell out of me. I have some smaller nitpicks, like I feel I could have indicated better that the tower you scale at the end was in fact Wily's tower, even though I don't think anyone needed to be told that it was. I wanted to place funny business names on all the buildings in the street section, except I wasn't clever enough to think of any. My graphics paled in comparison to the higher-ranked stages, and that's the art style I really ought to strive for in the future.

The level is thematically smooth and has a clear sense of direction, but the way I set it up left for some inconsistency. The first part of the level is the highway section, which combines platforming, enemy challenges, and gimmicks, while simultaneously introducing the three concepts therein. Then there's a Rush Jet section in the style of Mega Man 8, which leads to the street section, which is primarily enemy-based challenges with little in the way of interesting level geography or gimmicks. That's followed by a heavily platforming-intensive section, which reintroduces the gimmicks you hadn't seen for half the stage. It doesn't flow well, and in hindsight I saw places where I could have used the gimmicks I had introduced in the first part into the middle two sections. I'm kicking myself because I don't know why I didn't think of that sooner.

I'm surprised there were no judge complaints about my music selection. It was GXSCC, by all means I should have been lynched for it. My rationale for choosing the music I did was literally just, "Neon Gravity used an 8-bit song cover, why shouldn't I?", and even now I hesitate to name the song I did use for fear of embarrassing myself even further, unless somebody actually recognizes it (gonna go out on a limb and say my music interests are probably very different from most of the people here). I'm not fluently involved in the Mega Man fangame community, and this being my first time designing a level for anything, I didn't even know what GXSCC was until a few days before the deadline, and when I did figure it out, I was still too stubborn to change the music.

My laptop did not at all like this game engine. Mind you, I run on an older laptop that's far from being gaming-oriented, but I made the decision to compete in this contest so I had to work with what was available to me. My laptop was struggling to run the engine at 40 FPS the entire time. I knew this, and yet I failed to consider how the level would play on stronger computers that could hold 60 FPS. The Rush Jet section scrolled ever so slightly too quickly, and the boss ended up being much more nightmarish than I intended it to be. The idea to use conveyor belts in a Mecha Dragon fight was a better idea on paper. It was my attempt to stay consistent with a comment I made on here regarding using old ideas with some novelty factor. Except it wasn't. It really wasn't. I wasn't having any problems with my boss fight so I figured I was good to go, but then I saw Jupi die like 12 times to the boss on stream and I thought I was screwed. I think if I had just used the conveyor belts differently, I could have mitigated all the issues the judges were having with it. I was impressed though that Nathaniel managed to beat the boss on stream in one go.

At least there were some positives I could take away from this contest: I got a lot of reassurance that my level wasn't as bad as I made it out to be, and for that I am grateful. I achieved what I set out to do by applying my artistic skill in a practical way, and it was very well-received. I'm glad my reference with the address of Wily's tower was recognized. I managed to impress Garirry more than any other judge, from whom I was expecting the worst rating based on my perceptions of him through the first three-quarters of the level reviews. I appreciate that Pyro was able to recognize this level as a combination of Sunset Siege and City War, because those two levels were my chief inspirations and one of my goals was to take those concepts and make something better out of them both. And with the exception of the Crystalis-themed level that came later on, I don't think I recall hearing both Nathaniel and Z-Saber get so excited about many other levels in the contest (granted it might've just been tempered excitement for everything in between, and it was starting to get late by the time we actually finished). And hey, 21st place ain't bad for my first ever attempt at level design; completely obliterated my piss-poor expectations and placed well above some folks whom I thought for sure would've beaten me (would have really liked a Top 20 though :V).

All in all, I still don't feel like my level was very good, but for ranking as highly as it did, I really can't complain. Maybe I do need to get my self-confidence up. Anyway, it's nice to have some closure on this so I can finally stop worrying for no reason and get back to work. It was a pleasure participating in this contest, I enjoyed the process, and I especially enjoyed Nathaniel's results stream. I would so totally download the game when it comes out, if I knew my laptop would be able to handle it. Thanks to Zieldak for helping me with programming, no way I would've been able to do any of the coding required for the Rush Jet section by myself. I'll be back for Round 3 assuming we have one; I've got some ideas in mind that I want to use. And maybe I'll go back and make my own redux of this level one day, just to see if I can do it any better. I know I can, and I wish I did. For now though, I might just sod off for a while.
