Megaman Discussion Make a BAD Mega Man Level!
#1
We talk a lot about things that ruin Mega Man games and about making good Mega Man levels, but have we ever discussed deliberately making a BAD Mega Man level? Not just "enemies are invincible and the entire level is spikes," but something thoughtfully crafted to be as inane or miserable as possible while still technically playable. I think it's time to have some fun coming up with the most absurdly horrible level concepts and challenges we can think of.

For example:
- A level where you need to escort a Lyric to the very end without accidentally destroying it as it continually chases after you, and the level is just a swarm of Lyrics
- A level where your only weapon is Super Arm, but there are no blocks to pick up and throw
- Quick Man's level, but every enemy fires Quick Lasers (including Quick Man)
- The first Wily stage from MM4, but all the Metalls are asleep and don't come out from under their helmets (including the boss)
- A level with a sledding section where the only ground consists of Yoku blocks
- A mostly outdoor level where gravity reverses at random
- A level where, instead of dropping power-ups, defeated enemies drop Toad Man

Please, no snarky jabs at real games and levels. Let's keep this friendly and ridiculous.
No matter where you go, there you are.

A lot of the bad levels I've seen fail to introduce gimmicks and enemies properly.
With that in mind, here's some.
- Reverse gravity where you can completely avoid using the gravity ghe first time, then you have to use it over a spike pit
- The first Shield Attacker is on the first Yoku Blocks
wow this is total BS

The entire level is forced weapon usage. And you have nothing but your buster.

If you want to have a really sour mood, just add in an unwinnable boss fight and shoehorning unnecessary plot by having text boxes appear in each checkpoint (the start of the stage telling you what to do, the middle to explain the stage's gimmick in full detail, and the boss and how to beat him).

Put in Bootleg Lion King, and make him invincible while he twerks on you.

(Okay maybe he has one weakness..make him fall into a spike trap)

A level where you spawn into a black void. It then dawns on you as you're stuck forever and everything that you worked towards was meaningless and now all you will know is the darkness. You claw at the invisible barriers on the edge of the screen but to no avail. Your screams for help will go unanswered as you suffer in silence in the dark void.

Also you have limited buster shots.

A level where the only enemies you can damage are big eyes, and you can only do it with the charge shot, and the charge shot deals 1 damage.

How can the text box tell you how to beat the boss if he's unbeatable?

How about a level that spawns a Big Eye in front of you every time you press the fire button?

Or better yet, a level where everytime you press the jump button,Mega Man goes into a fetal position, sucks his thumb, and takes a dump

A level based on the cartoon episode Curse of the Lion Men.

Developed by the makers of Mega Man 1 and 3 for PC.

How about a level were, every time you jump or shoot, you lose health, and the pickups get more and more hard to find.

-An autoscrolling level consisting entirely of Footholders. Also, pit enemies everywhere.
-An autoscrolling level with low ceilings, unskippable Yoku block segments, every enemy is shielded, and the boss is Yellow Devil. That would be a speedrunner's worst nightmare.
-A boss battle consisting only of a single Met, who never raises its helmet.
-A SMW Kaizo level, but you play through it entirely as Mega Man. Good luck with some of those spin-jump areas.

Would that be regular Toad Man or 4MI Toad Man? If it's the latter, God help us all. XD

Ditto this. You'd think an evil genius would've thought about building an inescapable room full of instant death spikes waaaaay before he made SPRING MAN!

Gemini Man's stage could be torture with the right/wrong level design. Smile

A bottomless water section where you *just* have enough time (weapon energy) to make it using Rush Marine after collecting every single weapon energy piece, and Rush Jet cannot be used (e.g. one of the ROM hacks where you scroll down a screen while inside RM - in the MM3 engine you can scroll both across and down with RM whereas RJ will disappear - in the case of the ROM hack, you get dumped on top of spikes if you made it down there with RJ). Also, the crystal parts at the beginning have spike sections and nigh-impossible jumps while the Nitrons are homing in on you from above your shot range (hope you brought Magnet Missile with you). Maybe a few Chibees in the mix as well, a few annoyingly-placed Hammer Joes as well, or the fast-moving fish from Wily 1. I don't have a clue if the water affects how high Bouncer can jump, like the Tanishi shells and baby frogs did in Bubble Man's stage.

Another interesting/annoying thing would be having to shoot through a wall of Poles while inside the Rush Marine, all while your weapon energy is draining and you're hoping that they will drop some large power-ups. But of course, one could also walk on top of the eggs once a small path has been made and collect weapon energy that way.

But yes, go easy on the salt with actual levels here.

First off, you're all familiar with the infamous Force Beams, right?

Well, there could be a stage that was chock-full of them, not to mention the boss of said stage would be a Force Beam-firing Robot Master named "Force Man". I hope you saved up on all of those extra lives from earlier~!

Have enemies shoot spikes at you instead of bullets, but have the spikes stick to the walls and remain on screen.

Have the "Dr. W" sign before the boss gate fall on you and crush you when you get near it.
